Classical Piano as a major. Thats really dumb. It's like majoring in English. Really useful for a career. Fun for a hobby, but you need something that will make you money.

Hi Pappy,

If by "dumb" you mean impractical, then, yes, sometimes classical piano can seem like a "dumb" major. However, this is not always the case. There are plenty of people out there who make fulfilling careers out of music, mostly by teaching, writing and performing.

I, on the other hand am actually interested in non-profit management...Piano for me is a way to glean experience in a non-profit field.

Yes - getting an English degree can sometimes seem impractical too. But I truly believe it's what you make out of any degree you get or don't get.

Look at Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple and Pixar. He was a college dropout and still managed to follow his passion and create two major companies...I mean, it's not necessarily about being that "big", but just leaving your own positive mark in the world - making a difference regardless if you study music, English, or just life.
